Follow these 7 tips and it'll be much easier to make behavior charts work for you and your kids.

Behavior charts are a mystery to many people. But they can also be very effective when used properly. These 7 keys will help you make the behavior charts work so that your children can be happier and better behaved.

Key #1: Use a single measurable goal.

If the behaviors you want your child to start doing aren’t measurable, then how will you (or your child) know when the behavior has changed?

Go for measurable goals you can see with your eyes like: Make your bed every morning. Do your homework before watching TV. Take out the garbage.

Key #2: Express the desired outcomes in positive language.

Instead of focusing on what you want your child to stop doing, focus on what you want them to start doing.

Say, “Put your dishes in the sink,” instead of “Stop leaving dishes around the house.” This small distinction will make a big difference.

Key #3: Start with small expectations…

If your child has been misbehaving or not doing her chores for several weeks, months, or even years, remember…old habits die hard.

Don’t expect her to turn into your version of a perfect child over night. Focus on just one specific action you’d like her to start doing and stick with that goal until it is reached. Think baby steps and focus on only one behavior change at a time.

Key #4: Involve your kids in choosing the rewards.

Your child isn’t going to respond to the behavior chart if he doesn’t enjoy or like the reward. Think about it. Would you like to go to work if you were going to get paid in peanuts? Might work for an elephant, but not for you.

When your child is involved in selecting the reward they’re working toward (and agrees to it!) he’ll be more willing to participate in using the chart.

Key #5: Be patient.

Even if the behavior changes over night, you need to give it some time to become a new habit. Don’t stop using the chart just because your child has made her bed 7 days in a row.

Keep using the chart for at least a month on the same behavior to make sure that the new behavior is firmly in place. As your child gets better at it she can experience some “wins” for reaching her goal and that’s going to feel great.

Key #6: Take care of your own stress levels.

If you’re expecting your kids to be on good behavior, you need to be a role model. If you meet their temper tantrums and defiant behavior with your own style of tantrum, things are going to escalate…quickly.

Find out what keeps you calm and centered so that you can be available for whatever happens as your child is learning to respect themselves and the behavior chart system.

Key #7: Be consistent.

Behavior charts don’t work by themselves. They’re fueled by responsible parents and teachers who act as the backbone of the whole process. Consistency will help build trust between you and your child and will allow your child to feel comfortable trusting the process of using the charts.

If you say you’re going to use the chart daily, do that. If you tell your child she can have a friend spend the night as a reward for filling her weekly chart, by all means, have the slumber party.

When in doubt, put yourself in their shoes: If your boss said you were going to get paid on Friday and then Friday came along and he said, “Nope, no paycheck for you,” you’d start losing respect for your boss and your job.

Being consistent can be hard – but if you can pull it off, you’ll find a lot more success with the behavior charts.

For more information about making behavior charts work, check out the Behavior Charts To The Rescue Manual. You’ll get the complete system for making behavior charts work with your kids and students.

Like you, I never had a ton of money to spend on trinkets, toys, and rewards for the kids when I was teaching. So I had to get creative thinking about rewards and incentives I could use for students who completed their behavior charts.

There are tons of ideas that don’t cost anything. And for the ones that do, consider getting your room moms to help by donating some of the items in the list below like puzzles, pencils, or goodies for the goody bucket.

When using rewards for these behavior modification charts they must be meaningful to the child. Sara might not be inspired to work toward more time with the class pet, but she would love to visit her teacher from last year. So talk with your students and find out what gets them going.

Here are some creative ideas for classroom rewards…

Puzzle time

Nice note home

Eat lunch with the teacher

New pen, pencil or eraser

Extra computer time

Trip to the goodie bucket

Lunch with friend in another class

Bring a toy from home

Extra time with class pet

Be line leader

Trip to the library

Be teacher’s helper

No Homework Pass

Sit with a friend

Visit last year’s teacher

Play a game

Gain points for class store

First choice in class job rotation

Cool call home to parents about great behavior

If a student has trouble staying seated while you're teaching, a behavior chart can help.

When you’re choosing behaviors to modify with students in your classroom, it’s important that they be well within the students’ reach and not at a level of frustration.

Focus on one easy-to-achieve behaviors before increasing expectations. It’s okay if the behavior you put on the behavior chart is one that he’s “supposed to do anyway.”

The whole point in using behavior charts is to help your student get in the habit of doing more of the good stuff that makes your classroom move smoothly and makes it conducive for everyone to learn.

Not only do you need to make sure that the behavior you’re working on is doable, but you need to write it in the proper way on the behavior chart.

Here’s what I mean…

Here are some suggestions for appropriate behaviors worded in ways you DO want to use:

Raise your hand before speaking.

Turn in assignments.

Walk in the hallways.

Speak softly when working in groups.

Stay in your seat when I’m teaching.

The important thing about these behaviors is that they are measurable, simple, and positively stated. You want to focus on what you want them to do, not what you don’t want them to do.

Here are examples of behaviors you DO NOT want to use on these charts:

Don’t yell.

Stop running down the hall.

No fighting.

No interrupting.

Don’t call out while I’m teaching.

Notice that these are all the behaviors you want them to stop. They draw attention to the bad behavior.

Instead of drawing attention to these, focus on the behavior that you do want. Then it’s your job to “catch the students being good”. In this way, the desired behavior gets reinforced and you’re praising them when they’re doing the appropriate action.

There are some that have big spaces for younger kids who don’t have well-developed motor skills, and there are also coloring pages that have more detailed designs for older kids who are developing the ability to stay in the lines and want to make masterpieces.

These coloring pages can be used with crayons, markers, colored pencils, or even water color. You can print as many of them as you want – totally for free. Best yet, your kids are going to love them.

So take a look at the free coloring pages below and print the ones that you think your child will like. You can even invite your kids over to the screen so that they can pick the ones they like. This way, you can be sure that they like the coloring sheets you’re printing…

All the coloring sheets are made in black and white so that every aspect of them can be colored. You’ll need Adobe Reader to open the PDF versions of all the coloring pages. Your computer probably already has Adobe Reader. But if you have trouble opening the files, you’ll need to download Adobe Reader for FREE here.

The coloring pages are arranged by theme. So when it’s a particular holiday, you can download the whole set of coloring sheets related to that holiday. If your child like cars, you can get the whole set related to automobiles.
