Article: What to Do When Kids Are Talking Back
Question: How can I prevent back talking?
Response: Here's one of many tips I have for this issue...
Remember this truth: Children don't like it when you're upset with
them.
They're just like you in that way - they love it when things in the
family are happy and peaceful. It feels good, right?
So if they're talking back and being defiant, know that if they had a better way to deal with the situation, they'd take it!
Ultimately children don't want to be on bad terms with you.
One of the main reasons that kids talk back is because they're
feeling threatened and overpowered. This can be because of an adult
telling them what to do, or because the children aren't able to
express what they need or want when they're with you.
Keeping in mind that kids ultimately prefer when everyone is getting along, check in with yourself to see what you can do to create a friendlier environment.
Pay particular attention to whether you're asking questions, or you're giving them commands and demanding that they do things. If you're not sure how to talk to your child, think about how you'd like a boss talking to you.
Would you prefer that they say:
- "I want that assessment on my desk by 5pm...got it!?"
Or...
- "Can you have that assessment to me by 5pm today?"
You can start this today. Start noticing what a difference it makes to ask questions instead of making commands and demands. And really be open to the answer that you get back.
Remember, all children like it when things are going well in their lives. So if they're talking back, it's just because they don't know what else to do. See if you can support them in feeling supported by asking more questions.
